St Mary Magdalene, Leintwardine

Welcome to Leintwardine and the largest of the churches in the Parish of Wigmore Abbey with historic connections to the Mortimer Marcher Earls. Set in a conservation area, the church lies partly in and partly on the Vallum (rampart) of the major Roman settlement of Bravonium, which underlies the present village of Leintwardine.

The village, at the confluence of the rivers Teme and Clun (both SSSI’s), lies close to the Roman road running from Kenchester (Herefordshire) to Wroxeter (Shropshire) and is thought to have been a trading outpost with lodging facilities for travellers early in the Roman conquest of Britain.

Where did the village get its name? Partly from the Romano British name Lente for the Teme and Old English ‘eurde’ (settlement) and listed as Lenteurde in the Doomsday Book of 1086.

Today, Leintwardine proud of the historic connections, with its’ church at the centre is a thriving and friendly rural north Herefordshire village located between the Shropshire Hills of Ludlow and the Radnor Hills of Knighton. Throughout the year arts, cultural, community and Caring for God’s Acre events take place in St Mary Magdalene. The hope for the future is to create an Arts Centre within the church to help safeguard this lovely church that has stood sentry and guardian of all the souls that for over 1000 years have created the village and for those who continue today.
