St John The Baptist, Orcop

A picturesque church in an idyllic rural setting. Dating in part from the 12th century, an extensive Victorian restoration removed many of the medieval features but a fine vaulted ceiling with carved bosses remains. The structure features an attractive 16th century timber bell tower topped by a squat steeple. To celebrate the millenium, a stained glass east window of contemporary design was installed, based on the theme of “light”

In the churchyard is an ancient stone prayer cross.

Orcop is known increasingly as “the Poets’ Church” ,being the final resting place of the celebrated poet Frances Horovitz and a special venue for poetry and musical events.

It is a place of great peace and tranquility, well worth a visit.
